SB-50, A Tax Exemption on Gun Safes, Becomes Law in November

The Oklahoma Rifle Association is pleased to announce that SB-50, a new law providing a tax exemption for the purchase of gun safes and firearm locking devices will become law in November, marks a major step forward in promoting responsible gun ownership and improving firearm safety across the state.

Early on, Senator Joanna Dossett (D-Tulsa), reached out to Oklahoma Rifle Association President and National Rifle Association Vice President Mark Vaughan for guidance and support of her idea to encourage smart and safe gun storage in our state through a tax exemption on gun safes.

“I’m thankful to every member of the legislature who’s helped this bill over the last two years, especially my House author, Rep. Nick Archer,” said Sen. Dossett. “Additionally, I’m grateful for the expert collaboration and support from the ORA on this important issue.”

Nick Archer (R-Elk City), authored the legislation in the house, showing support from the Republican members of the legislature.

“This is a good move for gun owners and for safety,” said Rep. Archer. “Responsible storage protects our rights, our families, and our communities. This exemption encourages Oklahomans to invest in the tools that help prevent theft and keep firearms out of the wrong hands.”

Rep. Archer extended special thanks to Senator Jo Anna Dossett (D-Tulsa), who championed the measure in the Senate.

“I’m grateful to Senator Dossett for carrying this bill in her chamber. It’s proof that when it comes to protecting lives and rights, we can find common ground,” Archer said.

From the onset, the ORA has been championing SB-50, working alongside our state legislators and Oklahoma safe manufacturers to bring this important legislation to fruition.

“This was something the ORA could easily get behind as it supports a vital part of our organization’s mission to encourage safe and responsible gun ownership,” said ORA President and NRA VP Vaughan. “Also, from our partners in law enforcement, keeping unsecured guns out of the hands of criminals has been a growing concern and priority. This is a great step forward as the ORA was able to facilitate a bipartisan effort with Oklahoma Democrats and Republicans on this critical legislation.”

This is part of the mission of the Oklahoma Rifle Association to advocate on behalf of Oklahoma’s gun owners at the State Capitol as well as foster opportunity and empowerment within Oklahoma’s firearm community.  You can learn more at www.oklahomarifle.org.
